Boston Terrier Dog
For Love of a Dog Jewelry the Boston Terrier Dog
A true American, the Boston Terrier can trace its origins with rare accuracy to early 1870s Boston. There, a cross between an English Terrier and a Bulldog created a dog named Hooper?s Judge. Further breeding with smaller dogs brought the Boston Terrier down from Judge Hooper?s 30+ pounds to the size we see today, closer to 20 pounds. By the late 1880s, the dog was increasingly seen as an entirely new breed.
In 1889, fans of the breed formed the American Bull Terrier Club, but since there was already another breed called the Bull Terrier, it was quickly decided that the dog from Boston needed a new name. After experimenting with a few names that described the physical appearance of the dog, the most popular of which being Round Head, club members finally settled upon Boston Terrier, in honor of its birthplace. The Boston Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893, less than twenty years after the breed was created. Since then, the breed has steadily accumulated a large following, and today it is one of the most popular breeds in the United States.
